Himachal Pradesh occupies a vertical world. From the sub-tropical Shivalik foothills at 350 metres to the Trans-Himalayan desert plateaus of Spiti and Lahaul at over 4,500 metres, the state compresses more ecological and cultural variety into 55,673 square kilometres than most nations manage in ten times the space. The British found it useful as a summer refuge and built Shimla into their imperial capital away from the plains — a legacy still visible in the mock-Tudor facades along the Mall Road and the cast-iron columns of the Viceregal Lodge. But the real Himachal predates colonialism by millennia: Kullu Valley temples, the wooden shikhara architecture of Chamba, the Buddhist gompas of Kinnaur and Spiti all belong to civilisational timelines that have little to do with the Raj.

The state is administered in two distinct climatic zones. The lower districts — Kangra, Mandi, Hamirpur, Una — receive the full southwest monsoon and grow rice and tea. The higher districts — Lahaul-Spiti, Kinnaur, upper Kullu — lie in the rain shadow and receive snowfall instead of rainfall. Manali, the most visited city, sits at the junction of these two worlds: the Beas River valley is green and apple-orchard dense below, while the Rohtang La above is snowbound for seven months.

Travel logistics are demanding. State roads are narrow, landslide-prone from July through September, and frequently closed without notice. The Atal Tunnel (opened October 2020) now provides year-round access to Lahaul, bypassing Rohtang, but the broader Spiti circuit remains seasonal. The Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) operates buses to most valleys; private taxis are expensive but often the only practical option for off-road villages. Altitude acclimatisation is not optional — ascending too quickly from Chandigarh (350m) to the Manali area (2,050m) in a single day is manageable, but continuing to Rohtang (3,978m) or Kaza (3,800m) the next morning is a reliable way to end a holiday prematurely with a severe headache, vomiting, and genuine pulmonary risk.
