About Summer Hill
Summer Hill rises about 5 kilometres west of the Ridge as one of Shimla's seven original hill clusters and today carries the campus of Himachal Pradesh University, established on 22 July 1970 as the state's primary public university for postgraduate humanities and commerce study. Mahatma Gandhi stayed here repeatedly between 1936 and 1946 at Manorville, the Georgian-era residence of Rajkumari Amrit Kaur, India's first woman cabinet minister, rather than in Shimla's main colonial quarter closer to the Ridge. Pine forest and apple orchards cover much of the hillside between the university buildings, and the neighbourhood's own halt on the Kalka-Shimla heritage railway sits within walking distance of both the campus and the approach road to the neighbouring Viceregal Lodge.

Summer Hill developed during the colonial period as a quieter residential alternative to the administrative core around the Ridge and Mall Road, favoured by figures who wanted proximity to the seat of government without its social crush. Rajkumari Amrit Kaur's Manorville residence became one such retreat, and its role as Gandhi's repeated stopping point during his Shimla visits between 1936 and 1946 gave the hill a place in the independence movement's history distinct from the colonial architecture surrounding it.
Himachal Pradesh University's establishment in 1970, a little over two decades after independence, converted much of the hill's open land into an academic campus, a deliberate move to place the state's flagship public university close to the capital rather than in a more remote district. The university has since expanded across the hillside, and the presence of the neighbouring Viceregal Lodge - handed to the Indian Institute of Advanced Study in 1965 - means Summer Hill now hosts two distinct scholarly institutions within a few hundred metres of each other.

The steep, narrow lanes connecting Summer Hill to the Ridge and to the Viceregal Lodge approach road are used by local traffic as well as pedestrians, so care matters more here than on the pedestrianised Mall Road. Litter and noise near the residential sections draw the same municipal disapproval as anywhere else in Shimla, and photographing private homes, including Manorville, from outside their boundary walls is acceptable, but entering the grounds is not, since several such residences remain in private or institutional use.
