About Mall Road

Mall Road runs for about 1.5 kilometres along the contour of Shimla's central ridge and bars all private vehicles except a small number of government cars holding sealed road permits under local traffic rules, making it one of the longest continuously car-free shopping streets in North India. Built through the second half of the 19th century as the commercial spine serving the British summer capital, the street still carries names from that period - Scandal Point at its western junction with the Ridge takes its name from colonial-era gossip about a Kashmiri prince and an English official's daughter, a story every local guide tells with a different ending. Shopfronts along the street mix Tibetan handicraft stalls, Kullu shawl and pashmina outlets, the Himachal Emporium selling state-certified woollens and wood carvings, and colonial-era buildings now occupied by national clothing chains.

Best time of day: 17:00-20:00. When shops are fully open, the evening promenade crowd arrives, and restaurant terraces fill for dinner.

History of Mall Road

Mall Road took shape after Shimla's designation as the summer capital of British India in 1864, when the civil and military administration needed a commercial centre close to the Viceregal and government offices scattered across the surrounding hills. Merchants, tailors, and provisioners set up shop along the levelled stretch below the Ridge, and by the early 20th century Mall Road carried banks, bookshops, and the General Post Office alongside tailoring houses that dressed the colonial administration.

Mall Road's vehicle ban is not a modern tourism measure but an extension of colonial-era restrictions that limited motor traffic on the Mall to protect pedestrians on the narrow ridge-line street; the rule persists today under the Shimla Municipal Corporation and the Shimla Road Users Act, enforced by barriers at both ends of the pedestrian stretch. Rickshaws were never permitted here either, which is why hand-pulled and pony transport historically served the street's freight needs instead.

Only pedestrians, handcarts, and permit-holding government vehicles may use Mall Road; tourists arriving by taxi are dropped at Cart Road below or at the ends of the pedestrian zone and must walk in. Pony rides offered along the street should be settled on price before mounting - riders typically charge Rs 200-400 for a short loop as of 2026, and bargaining is expected and normal.

Most shops accept UPI payments alongside cash, though smaller handicraft stalls may prefer cash for negotiated prices. Bargaining is customary at independent stalls selling shawls, caps, and wooden souvenirs, but fixed-price government emporiums such as the Himachal Emporium do not negotiate.
