About Christ Church

Christ Church stands on the eastern edge of the Ridge at a height of about 90 feet and ranks as one of the oldest churches in North India, with its foundation stone laid on 9 September 1844 and the building consecrated on 10 January 1857. Built of stone and brick set in lime mortar under the supervision of Colonel J.T. Boileau, the neo-Gothic structure took nearly thirteen years to complete and was designed to seat Shimla's growing British garrison and civil service population rather than a single congregation. Five stained-glass windows on the chancel wall represent Faith, Hope, Charity, Fortitude, and Patience, and the fresco beneath the western window follows a design credited to Lockwood Kipling, father of the writer Rudyard Kipling.
