Day trips from Marrakech
Worth a day out if you have one to spare, nearest first.
35 km · 45m-1h
Agafay Desert
A stony, semi-desert plateau south-west of Marrakech, used for camel rides, quad tours and sunset dinners; it is not sand dunes, so set expectations accordingly.
60 km · 1h-1h15
Ourika Valley (Setti Fatma)
A green valley in the High Atlas foothills with Berber villages, a river with terraced restaurants and a waterfall walk at Setti Fatma; cooler than Marrakech in summer, but check road conditions after heavy rain.
65 km · 1h30-2h
Imlil and the High Atlas (Toubkal gateway)
The trailhead village for Jbel Toubkal (4,167 m, North Africa's highest peak) and a base for guided day walks among Amazigh (Berber) villages; the valley was hard hit by the 2023 earthquake, so verify access with local operators.
150 km · 2h30-3h
Ouzoud Falls
A 110-metre waterfall in the Middle Atlas foothills with walking paths and Barbary macaques, best from spring to early summer when flow is strongest.
175 km · 2h30-3h
Essaouira
A UNESCO-listed Atlantic port with 18th-century ramparts, a fishing harbour and cooler, windy air; served by direct buses from Marrakech, and a full day trip is tiring but feasible, with an overnight stay better.
180 km · 3h30-4h
Ait Benhaddou (via Tizi n'Tichka pass)
A UNESCO-listed ksar (fortified earthen village) used as a film location, reached by the winding Tizi n'Tichka road over the High Atlas at about 2,200 m; snow can slow the pass in winter, and most visitors make it an overnight trip.
About Marrakech
The old city is organised around Jemaa el-Fnaa, the open square that UNESCO also recognises for its living oral traditions, with the souks running north from it, the Koutoubia minaret to the west, and the palaces and tombs of the Saadian and Alaouite eras spread across the southern medina. The 20th-century French-built district of Guéliz lies to the north-west and holds the Majorelle Garden, restaurants and hotels, and the medina and Guéliz are about 2.5 kilometres apart.
Most visitors arrive at Marrakech Menara Airport (RAK), about 6 kilometres from Jemaa el-Fnaa; Bus 19 runs to the square for MAD 30 one-way, and petit taxis and pre-booked transfers cover the rest. The ONCF railway station, roughly 5 kilometres west of the medina, has trains to Casablanca (about 3 hours) and on to Rabat and Tangier. Inside the medina, cars cannot enter most lanes, so the last stretch is on foot, by handcart porter or by motorbike. Petit taxis (beige) start near MAD 7 on the meter, though drivers frequently refuse the meter, so agree a fare first.
March to May and September to November give the most comfortable weather; July and August regularly reach 38 degrees Celsius or more, and December-February are cool at night with snow on the Atlas visible from rooftops. The September 2023 Al Haouz earthquake damaged parts of the medina, including the Koutoubia minaret, which cracked but remained standing; the Bahia Palace reopened about a month afterwards, and a restoration programme covering El Badi Palace, the Saadian Tombs and the city walls is still under way, so some areas may be fenced. Ramadan shortens monument hours and moves the city's energy into the evening.
