About Southeast Vietnam

Southeast Vietnam (Dong Nam Bo) is the country's most heavily industrialised and trade-driven region, anchored by Ho Chi Minh City on the Saigon River. The terrain is a low, gently rolling plain of red basalt and grey alluvial soil, drained by the Saigon and Dong Nai rivers and edged to the south by the mangrove estuaries of Can Gio, which UNESCO designated a biosphere reserve in 2000. To the north-west the plain runs into Cu Chi and Tay Ninh, farming and rubber country that was contested ground during the Vietnam War, and to the south-west it opens into the Mekong Delta, reachable in under three hours by road. Provincial boundaries were redrawn in 2025, so older guidebooks and maps may show districts and provinces that no longer appear on official signage.

The climate is tropical monsoon with two seasons rather than four. The dry season runs from December to April, with clear skies and daytime highs of roughly 30-35°C, and March to May is the hottest stretch. The wet season, May to November, brings short heavy downpours most afternoons rather than all-day rain, so mornings stay usable. Typhoons rarely reach this latitude. Most visitors treat December to March as the comfortable window, when humidity is lowest and the tunnels, temples and river routes are easiest to walk.
