Über Government Rose Garden

The Government Rose Garden in Udhagamandalam opened in May 1995 to mark the Centenary Flower Show of the town's Government Botanical Garden, laid out across roughly 4 hectares on the slopes of Elk Hill at an altitude of about 2,200 metres. Five curving terraces follow the hill's contour, planted originally with 1,919 rose varieties and 17,256 individual plants; the collection has since grown to more than 20,000 plants across upward of 2,800 cultivars, spanning hybrid teas, floribundas, miniatures, climbers, and ramblers. The World Federation of Rose Societies named it a Garden of Excellence, a distinction held by only around three dozen gardens worldwide, and the terraced layout culminates at the Nila Madam viewpoint, which frames Doddabetta peak above the massed colour of the lower beds.
