Top Station sits at roughly 1,700–1,900 metres elevation on the Kerala–Tamil Nadu border, about 32 kilometres from Munnar town and a full hour's drive along a narrow, switchbacked road. The name is literal rather than promotional: this was the upper terminus of an early-20th-century transport system built to move tea chests down from the High Range plantations to the railhead on the Tamil Nadu plains below, and the viewpoint today looks directly down that same steep escarpment into the Kannan Devan valley on one side and toward the flatter Tamil Nadu countryside on the other. History of Top Station

British tea planters built a transport corridor down this escarpment in the early 20th century to solve a basic logistics problem: Munnar's tea was grown at altitude, but the nearest railhead sat on the Tamil Nadu plains far below, with no road capable of the descent. A narrow-gauge line, the Kundale Valley Light Railway, and later an aerial ropeway carried tea chests from a station at the top of the ridge — hence Top Station — down to a corresponding Bottom Station near the plains, where the cargo transferred to rail wagons bound for the coast.

A catastrophic flood in 1924, remembered locally as the Great Flood of '99 by the old Malayalam calendar, destroyed much of the light railway infrastructure across the High Range, after which the ropeway briefly carried the load until motor roads made both obsolete by the mid-20th century. The name Top Station outlived the machinery it was built to serve.
