Founded as a trading post by the East India Company's Job Charnock in 1690 on the eastern bank of the Hooghly River, it grew within a hundred years into the capital of British India — the most significant city in Asia outside China — and then spent the century following Independence gradually working through the psychological aftermath of that demotion. The city's architecture carries this history in its bones: Georgian colonnaded warehouses on the Strand, Venetian-Gothic piles along BBD Bagh, crumbling zamindari mansions in Shyambazar, and the neo-classical dome of Victoria Memorial gleaming white above the Maidan. The Maidan itself — 400 hectares of unbuilt open land at the centre of the city — is a daily social commons: cricket nets in the morning, political rallies in the afternoon, food vendors setting up folding tables at dusk. The city's tramway network, running on 30-tonne steel trams that have operated since 1880, is the last functioning tram system in India and worth riding purely for its anachronistic gravity. Kolkata's intellectual culture is genuine and non-performative: its second-hand book markets on College Street, its hundreds of small cultural societies, its tradition of para festivals (neighbourhood Durga Puja celebrations) — these are not curated for outsiders. Getting around is best done by Metro (the oldest in India, operational since 1984), yellow Ambassador taxis (metered, flag fall ₹30), or app-based cabs. The Howrah railway terminus on the opposite bank of the Hooghly is the busiest rail station in the world by some measures and connects Kolkata to every major Indian city.
