Über Indian Museum

The Indian Museum opened on 2 February 1814, founded by the Asiatic Society of Bengal under the Danish botanist Nathaniel Wallich, making it the oldest and largest museum in India as of 2026. The present Italianate building on Chowringhee Road, designed by W. L. Granville and completed in 1875, houses six curatorial sections spread across thirty-five galleries covering art, archaeology, anthropology, geology, zoology, and economic botany — a range broad enough that a single visit rarely covers all of it. The single most photographed object is the complete set of carved sandstone railings and gateways from the 2nd-century-BCE Bharhut Buddhist stupa, reassembled indoors after being excavated from a Madhya Pradesh site that had otherwise vanished. A four-thousand-year-old Egyptian mummy, acquired in the 19th century through the Asiatic Society's international exchange networks, remains the gallery children ask about first.

The Asiatic Society of Bengal, founded by the Orientalist scholar Sir William Jones in 1784, had accumulated specimens, manuscripts, and antiquities for three decades before deciding the collection needed a dedicated public building; Nathaniel Wallich, then superintendent of the Calcutta Botanical Garden, pushed the proposal through and became the museum's founding curator in 1814. Independence in 1947 changed the museum's administration from colonial government to the newly formed Ministry of Education (later Culture), but the core Victorian-era gallery layout survived largely intact until a major restoration closed sections of the building from September 2013 to February 2014.
