Über Delhi

Delhi ist keine einzelne Stadt, sondern die Summe von mindestens sieben eigenständigen Siedlungen, die über zwei Jahrtausende hinweg von aufeinanderfolgenden Herrschern errichtet, aufgegeben und teilweise für neue Bauten ausgeschlachtet wurden. Die Ruinen von Lal Kot, dem Fort Tughluqabad, Siri, Ferozabad, Jahanpanah, Dinpanah und Shahjahanabad sind von der Ausdehnung einer Millionenmetropole mit heute über zwanzig Millionen Einwohnern verschluckt oder überbaut worden – was Delhi zu einer der archäologisch reichsten Hauptstädte der Welt macht, selbst wenn Baukräne unablässig bedrohen, was davon übrig geblieben ist.

Für ernsthafte Reisende ist Delhi zugleich Ziel und Tor zum Land. Die UNESCO-gelisteten Monumente der alten Mogulstadt – Rotes Fort, Jama Masjid, Humayuns Grabmal – dienen vielen nur als Ausgangspunkt für Routen nach Rajasthan oder Agra, doch wer die Stadt als eigenständiges Ziel behandelt, wird reich belohnt. Das Viertel Mehrauli rund um den Qutub-Minar-Komplex versammelt auf einem einzigen Quadratkilometer mehr mittelalterliches Mauerwerk, als manche europäische Hauptstadt insgesamt vorzuweisen hat. Nizamuddin Basti, das Sufi-Viertel rund um den Dargah von Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya, funktioniert wie ein mittelalterliches Dorf, das sich in eine moderne Stadt verirrt hat: Donnerstagabends erklingt Qawwali-Gesang, enge Gassen duften nach Rosenwasser und Biryani, und ein Mogul-Gartengrab liegt nur wenige Minuten entfernt.

Das Klima ist extrem: In den Wintermonaten (Dezember bis Februar) legt sich ein so dichter Nebel über die Stadt, dass Frühflüge regelmäßig gestrichen werden und die Monumente in einem fotogenen, aber frustrierenden weißen Dunst verschwinden. Im Sommer steigen die Temperaturen auf über 43 °C. Oktober und November bieten vor der Nebelsaison den klarsten Himmel, auch wenn sich die Luftqualität im gesamten Hauptstadtterritorium nach Diwali durch saisonalen Stoppelfeuer-Rauch aus Haryana und Punjab drastisch verschlechtert. Die Delhi Metro, deren Linien alle wichtigen Kulturzonen abdecken, macht das Verhandeln mit Auto-Rikschas beim Besichtigen der Sehenswürdigkeiten weitgehend überflüssig – nur der letzte Kilometer bis zu Humayuns Grabmal und einigen Stätten in Mehrauli verlangt entweder eine Fahrradrikscha oder ein sicheres Gespür für Feilschregeln.
