भारत, भारतीय उपमहाद्वीप के अधिकांश हिस्से में फैला है — उत्तर में काराकोरम पर्वतमाला से लेकर दक्षिण में कन्याकुमारी के समुद्र-संगम तक 3,214 किलोमीटर, और पश्चिम में कच्छ के रण से लेकर पूर्व में ब्रह्मपुत्र डेल्टा तक 2,933 किलोमीटर। इस विशाल भौगोलिक फैलाव के चलते यहां की जलवायु में इतनी विविधता है कि कोई एक यात्रा-मौसम सबके लिए सही नहीं बैठता: मई में जहां राजस्थान के मैदान 48°C तक तपते हैं, वहीं मनाली का रोहतांग दर्रा उसी समय बर्फ से ढका रहता है, और अंडमान द्वीप समूह में साल भर तापमान लगभग 27°C बना रहता है। उत्तरी मैदानों और हेरिटेज सर्किट — राजस्थान, आगरा, दिल्ली, वाराणसी — के लिए घूमने का सबसे अच्छा समय अक्टूबर से मार्च की शुरुआत तक रहता है। केरल के बैकवाटर, तमिलनाडु के मंदिर परिसर, और कर्नाटक के धरोहर स्थल साल भर घूमे जा सकते हैं, बस जून से अगस्त के मानसून के दौरान थोड़ी सावधानी बरतनी पड़ती है। हिमालयी राज्य — हिमाचल प्रदेश, उत्तराखंड, लद्दाख, सिक्किम — ऊंचाई के हिसाब से अपने-अपने मौसम में खुलते हैं: लद्दाख के दर्रे जून में खुलते हैं और अक्टूबर में बंद हो जाते हैं, जबकि शिमला और दार्जिलिंग जैसे निचले हिमालयी स्थान मार्च से नवंबर तक आसानी से पहुंचे जा सकते हैं।

- Two-tier ticket prices. ASI monuments charge foreign visitors many times the Indian rate; SAARC and BIMSTEC citizens pay the lower rate.
- Dry states. Alcohol is prohibited in Gujarat, Bihar, Nagaland, Mizoram and most of Lakshadweep. Gujarat issues visitor permits.
- ID at hotels. Hotels must record your passport and visa, and many ask for a copy.
