About

Se Cathedral is, by most conventional measures of floor area, the largest church in Asia — a claim repeated so often in guidebooks that it has become almost invisible, but standing in its 76-metre nave makes the scale legible in a way the statistic alone does not. Construction ran from 1562 to roughly 1619, spanning the reigns of successive Portuguese viceroys, and the resulting building is a study in restrained Portuguese-Gothic exteriors wrapped around a Corinthian-columned interior whose whitewashed lime-plastered walls throw an even, shadowless light across the nave floor. The most immediately visible historical scar is asymmetry: the cathedral was designed with twin bell towers, but the northern tower collapsed after a lightning strike in 1776 and was never rebuilt, leaving only the southern tower standing — inside it hangs the Sino de Ouro, the Golden Bell, cast in the same era and renowned across Portuguese India for a tone said to carry across the Mandovi to Panaji on a still evening.

Moderate

History

The cathedral's dedication to St. Catherine of Alexandria is not incidental: Afonso de Albuquerque's Portuguese forces captured Old Goa from the Bijapur Sultanate on 25 November 1510, the feast day of St. Catherine, and the original modest chapel built on the site to commemorate the victory was expanded over the following half-century into the cathedral seen today. Construction proper began in 1562 under Viceroy Dom Francisco Coutinho, on the orders of King Dom Sebastião of Portugal, and continued under successive administrations for nearly six decades — the facade and towers were the last elements finished, around 1619, though some interior chapels and the retable of the high altar continued to be embellished well into the following century.

The high altar's gilded reredos depicts scenes from the life of St. Catherine, and the cathedral houses several side chapels of note, including the Chapel of the Cross of Miracles, built around a cross reported by witnesses in 1619 to have grown in size and, in Catholic tradition, to have exhibited apparitions — a claim that made it an active pilgrimage site distinct from the cathedral's general parish function. The 1776 lightning strike that destroyed the northern tower was treated at the time as a significant loss; period Portuguese colonial records describe repeated but ultimately abandoned plans to rebuild it, and the asymmetrical facade has stood unaltered for nearly 250 years.

Rules & etiquette

As an active cathedral of the Archdiocese of Goa, the same dress-code expectations apply here as at the neighbouring Basilica of Bom Jesus: shoulders and knees should be covered, and shawls are available at the entrance for visitors in shorts or sleeveless tops. Photography without flash is permitted in the nave, but tripods and extended photography setups are discouraged during the busier midday hours when they obstruct the flow of visitors through the narrow side aisles.

Mass is held daily, and the cathedral closes to general tourist circulation during these services — check locally posted times, since they shift slightly by season and around religious feast days including the Feast of St. Catherine on 25 November, when the cathedral hosts a significantly larger congregation and limited casual visitation.

The Golden Bell tower itself is not open for public climbing; it is viewed and photographed from ground level only. Vendors near the church square sell devotional items and postcards; as with the Basilica, a brief decline is more effective than prolonged negotiation with persistent sellers.

Traveller tips

Se Cathedral is the natural second stop after the Basilica of Bom Jesus — the two buildings face each other across the same open square, and walking between them takes under two minutes. Visiting the cathedral first thing after the Basilica, before 11:00, avoids both buildings' respective midday crowd peaks, since tour operators typically schedule Old Goa as a single combined stop rather than staggering the two sites.

The ASI museum in the former Convent and Church of St. Francis of Assisi, a short walk from the cathedral within the same complex, holds an underappreciated collection of Portuguese-period funerary stonework, carved wooden panels salvaged from the demolished Church of St. Augustine, and portraits of colonial-era Goan clergy — worth the modest separate entry fee if time allows, since it directly contextualises what the cathedral's own bare walls no longer display.

The cathedral's interior is considerably cooler than the exterior courtyard even at midday, owing to the thick laterite-and-lime-plaster wall construction; it is a reasonable place to pause and rehydrate during a hot Old Goa circuit rather than only a photographic stop. Water and shaded seating within the complex itself are limited to a single small stall near the car park shared with the Basilica.

Frequently asked questions

Is Se Cathedral really the largest church in Asia?

It is widely cited as such by floor area among churches of its era, at roughly 76 metres in nave length. Whether it holds that precise superlative depends on which structures are included in the comparison, but its scale within the Old Goa complex and among Portuguese colonial churches in Asia is undisputed.

Why does the cathedral facade look asymmetrical, with only one bell tower?

The cathedral was originally built with two towers, but the northern tower collapsed after a lightning strike in 1776 and was never rebuilt. Only the southern tower survives, housing the Golden Bell (Sino de Ouro).

Can visitors climb the surviving bell tower to see the Golden Bell up close?

No, the tower is not open for public climbing. The bell is viewed and photographed from ground level in the church square below.

How much time should be allotted for Se Cathedral within an Old Goa visit?

Around 45 minutes for the cathedral itself is sufficient for most visitors. Combined with the Basilica of Bom Jesus directly across the square and the ASI museum a short walk away, a full Old Goa circuit takes three to four hours.
